Happy New Year from Central Cal.
Woke up today to extreme clear skies and calm winds...perfect for a trip around the block. Opened the hanger at 9am and was in the run-up area by 9:15. A quick but thorough check and I was rolling down runway 29 for a straight out to Morro Bay, quickly passing a Cub that had departed ahead of me. Level at 1000' and 140 indicated covered the distance to the shoreline and my home in less than 5 minutes. I did several circuits over my house drawing a small crowd on our balcony below when a Skylane from the east decided to invade my space. After a couple turns 'round and 'round I felt a slight challenge when he tightened his turn 180deg across the valley and my "fangs" came out. I went wot, pulled up and graced into a 4g turn never losing sight of my target. In the blink of an eye was on his six in perfect firing position. Seeing the battle was lost he leveled out, shook his tail in defeat, and headed off to the east. Oh,sweet victory! To celebrate I dropped down to 500' and headed northbound over the shoreline where I was greeted by the sight of two whales sliding side by side just beneath the surface. Got a great veiw of the annual Polar Bear swim at Cayucos peir and then it was back to SBP for a perfect 3 pointer on runway 25. As I taxied back to the hanger I overheard a smoldering Skylane pilot mutter "I'll get you next year Fred Barron". Next News years day...... can't wait!
