The following is a list of tools I have used to build my Sonerai IILS airframe. It can certainly be done with less, or with different tools, but I have found these to be useful time savers.
BANDSAW, cutting tube and plate, barstock, bearing blocks.
BENCH GRINDER, forming tube ends, rounding tab corners.
DREMEL TOOL, trimming canopy, cutouts in flooring and instrument panel.
RIGHT ANGLE DIE GRINDER (air), grinding bad welds, wire brushing metal.
TUBE DRILLING JIG, (home made), centering holes in tubing and barstock.
DEBURRING TOOL, machinist’s type, deburring tube internal diameter and holes in plate.
ARBOR PRESS, ¼ ton, small pressing jobs.
12 TON HYDRAULIC PRESS, die forming hole flanges and stiffeners on ribs, forming bends in plate.
LATHE, turning bushings, squaring axle attachment plates, engine mount spools.
PRESS BRAKE, forming box baffles, vent doors, rib attachment angles, other small sheet parts.
DRILL PRESS, lots of holes.
VSR DRILL, more holes.
RIVET PULLER, air for the hard rivets, small manual riveter for the softer rivets.
RIVET GUN, for the real ones, and bucking bars.
REAMERS, chucking type, 1/8” through 3/8”, and tapers for the taper pins in the spar carry through.
AIR COMPRESSOR, 3.5HP 150PSI 15 gallon.
OA WELDING TORCH, plus tanks, hoses, cart, goggles, striker, tip cleaner.
BENCH VISE, 5”.
BELT & DISK SANDER.
INCIDENTAL TOOLS:
Rubber hammer, dead blow hammer, ball peen hammer, heavy duty snips, aviation snips, silver pencils, fine point markers, centering punch, spring clamps, quick clamps, C clamps, drill bits, 12” long drill bits, countersinks, hole saws, sanding drums, carbide burr, wire brushes, screwdrivers, English and metric socket set, deep wall sockets, English and metric combination wrenches, razor knives, sandpaper, tape measure, pliers, channel lock pliers, vise grips, fly cutter, tab holding jig (home made), combination ratchet wrenches, welding magnets, telescoping magnet, 8” digital caliper, mechanics creeper.
SAFETY:
First aid kit, with burn ointment.
Fire extinguisher, a good one.
Gallon jug of water.
Hearing protection.
Safety glasses.
Leather welding gloves.
Cell phone - in case things get out of hand.
