Hello all, I have a 2L about a mid 80"s model and time to update the engine to a 1915 ,electric start would be nice but will the starter motor fit without moderfying the fuslage,on the GP dimensions page it looks like the bottom mounting starter extends further than the mag and would seem to be very close to the bottom of the frame. The top mounted im not sure if theres enough room under the cowl??? thanks Mab

IF we are talking about a pulley end drive engine - and not a flywheel or rear drive - I believe this is what I was told when I asked the question: The Diehl accessory case with the top starter mount (12:00) will fit, but a section of the middle of the top crossmember on the frame must be cut out and a section of new tube welded under the cut to reinforce it. The Diehl bottom mount starter accessory case (6:00) fits without alteration. Don't know anything about the 9:00 positioned starter, but I don't recall anyone using one in a Sonerai. Hope that helps, and its likely more knowledgeable folks will also reply.
I will have a used 12:00 Diehl accessory case and mounted starter for sale soon.

I have a 6:00 deihl, GP starter and slick mag. The starter sticks out about 1" past the mag. It comes within 1" of the central support tube that angles down to the lower cross member. Also the right hand (from the seat looking forward) tube that angles to the RH lower engine mount comes extremely close as well. It is very hard to fit a cover around it the starter without interfering with the firewall support tubes. My sonerai was biult in 77. The elec was added only a few years ago.

Tom, Email me off line, about the 12:00 postition accy case. As you know I have a 2LT with 6:00 position mount. I have been thinking about converting to the 12:00 position. My starter currently sits about .040 from the support tube and removal of the engine will be required to service the starter.
