As stated on other thread regarding "what kind of Brakes", I have done a lot of work on my plane this year. But actually, there was a lot more done than just the brakes….see below.
I did the following as stated in the previous thread….
Recently did new brake shoes & turned rotors on my lathe...also new wheel bearings, new tires & leak proof tubes....oh & straightened landing gear, moved brakes forward & up higher on landing gear, made the landing gear leading & trailing edge "bullet shaped", scratch fabricated & installed pressure recovery wheel pants & landing gear to fuselage fairings. Oh...and set alignment to 0 degrees toe in/out at 3 point attitude.....phew!!!
Other work also performed from above. Dec 2010 to now.
---Modified my trailer. Straightening the landing gear raised the plane…plane would not fit right. Remember , I have to trailer my plane for every flight…not spoiled like you lucky high rent paying “Hangar Dwellers”
---Painted my scratch made (4) piece holy cowl (now my plane has a name painted on it “Yellow Peril”.
Painted the cowling (3) times…paint would not match rest of plane…still does not match $400.00)
---Fixed my radio (bad radio to headset adaptor $35.00))
---Fixed the middle canopy hinge (broke while taxiing…ground rough due to long bad drought. Had to remove the canopy off of the plane)
---Did annual.
---Finished tipping & cuffing & test fling (2) of my homemade propellers. Prop #1 is now painted & it is ON my plane…good climb fair cruise. Prop #2 had great climb & fair cruise. That prop is on my prop rig now being worked on. This prop is being “thinned” considerably & coverd with (2) uni 7oz glass & (1) bi 7oz glass at a 45’. Trying to finish this weekend… Looking for WOT 170MPH/2700RPM & 1000’FPM/120MPH….we will see…
---Looking for a change in incidence…lowered the rear spar 1/8” (this was a lot of work…domino effect. Remove belly pan, remove seat back, re adjust aileron mixers, cut threaded stud grind down bearing housing) Tested plane with both ailerons ½” reflexed UP….anemic climb, speed gain don’t think so, plane did not like this rigging arrangement. Tested with both ailerons ½” reflexed DOWN….good climb very stable…but I am sure lost some speed. Now I got them at both ailerons 3/16” reflexed DOWN…not tested yet.
Here is a summary of what all of the above really means.
1. Buy a propeller don’t build one…it is a lot of work & it takes several tries to get it right or not so right.
2. Don’t mess with lowering or raising your rear spar…it’s a lot of work.
3. DON”T ever try to scratch make a cowling or wheel pants…it will take forever. Buy them!! Did I tell you I hate fiberglass work!!!
4. I set my alignment at 0 toe in/out. Joe knowitall said “1’ toe in is best”….Frank Allexpert said “no, only slight toe out works” My plane tracks straight as an arrow now.
5. Setting my ailerons reflexed UP was not a good idea.
6. Don’t taxi over 2” cracks on the ground during a drought with your canopy open.
7. Don’t be a “cheap skate” get a hanger & quit ferrying your plane from your garage to the airport. You think “Hanger rash” is bad? You should try “Tow to the airport for every flight rash”…it itches a lot more.
8. Leak proof inner tubes should be called “leak less than the other” inner tubes.
9. If a part says “aircraft” on it, be prepared to pay more. The wheel bearings I got from the local supply house were 1/3 the price than what Spruce & others wanted….same part number.
10. Don’t be a “cheap skate” and buy your paint from O’Rilley’s if the rest of your plane was painted with Polytone…it will not match, even if you do it 3 times you dummy. Buy Polytone , or same as you painted the rest of the plane with.
11. Finding a radio problem can be frustrating if you are “radio challenged”
12. Make sure when using your small lathe, specifically one not intended for turning rotors, that you get a good grip on the rotor….or it will fly off.
13. When using an epoxy dispenser hand pump to bleed your brakes, please be careful. If the little hose comes off while you are pushing on the plunger, red brake juice will squirt everywhere, including all over you.
14. If you make hard landings, your gear can/will bend. Bending your gear back to original specs is difficult. You got to take the gear off the plane, make a press with a shoe, then… bend.. check… bend… check… Also, It can get you in hot water with other Sonerai site members. Some will tell you that straightening the gear is bad & others will it is OK …..phew!!!
