I found the Leading Edge radius cracked of a fairing for an aileron balance weight, Upon inspection I found that the mass balance weight contacts the inside of the fairing. I suppose that during control checks this contact is made and the fairing cracked. This appears to be new. The weight consists of a welded 4130 steel arm with a 2" X 2" x 1" block of lead at the end.
I could make the fairing deeper say 3" deep but that is more drag. Does anyone have a better idea, one with less or no drag?

I don't know if it will work or not, but I am thinking about using aluminum instead of fiberglass for that fairing. On my wing, during cruise, the led weight is mostly inside the wing, and only drops down when up aileron is used on that wing. I am wondering if just covering the hole with a sheet of .025 aluminum which would be fastened at the front with screws. When the lead weight comes down, the aluminum would just bend when contacted by the weight. Air pressure from flight would hold it up against the wing otherwise. Just thinking about it.

I received an email from someone off list, that he had used counterweights attached to the aileron outboard rib and the counterweight replaces part of the wingtip. I have seen this done before but not on a Sonerai. Certainly there would be some drag reduction but also the elimination of the fairing might reduce a few ounces of weight. It might be worth some work. Possible Jeff has something that works fairly well. Bill
