Anyone here done the fat fins head mod? I've been reading a bit, and this sounds like it may be a workable solution to heat management. There are some down sides to the process, but it appears that it may be worthwhile IF excessive CHT is a problem. waynesexperiments.blogspot.com/Any thoughts? Tom

My buddy's KR2 does but he says there is no noticible difference from the old heads.

I think a better oil cooler would solve the issue.

Thanks guys. Yes a decent oil cooler is my first choice, much less fuss and benefits the entire engine. This is a 2180, so I don't anticipate serious cooling issues.
Brings to mind another question. I know a lot of builders use the larger oil cooler mounted under the sump. What I gather is that the cooler is mounted to an aluminum baffle that makes use of the smiley cowl cutout, and the baffle then mounts via the metric threaded holes on the sides of the sump - correct? Obviously the baffle and cooler must be removeable for oil changes. Is this accurate, or is there a better way?

It was too efficient on Mouser, and I mounted the oil cooler on the bottom of the baffle with a (roughly) 2" x 4" opening.

for slow flying high-drag planes, fat fins might be a good idea. For Sonerai's, KR's and the like it is likely less benificial.

Thanks for the replies, guys. This is very helpful. While there is a Sonerai II on our local field, it is a different critter than mine, so I have to research a lot of things.
