A while back Gaston mentioned melting "epoxy" on his refinished prop. Check this out... I had sanded these tips to a reasonably smooth surface. After running it at 3800rpms for a few hours check out the tip again. The heat from friction further post cured the epoxy showing the weave of the fabric. Things that make you go Hmmm... Oh my, is it shedding epoxy? I wonder if the paint is reacting with the epoxy when it heats up. Does the backside look similar? Maybe its because of the hot orange speed stripe. ;D

Hi Jeff, what kind of epoxy do you have used? Have you take any filler? What is your prop diameter? What's the tip speed? Do you have tempered the prop tip?
On my new prop I have served the leading edge on the prop tip also with (thin) glass and epoxy. I have taken a very slow Epoxy, but not tested yet. with best regards Juergen

I wonder if using vinyl ester resin wouldn't be better then epoxy in this application? It has a much higher glass transition temp then epoxy.

I also think also, the glass transition temp is the problem.. it is higher on vinyl ester, polyester and special epoxy version for higher temps. I remember about my first flight as passenger in a DC9 20 years (or so) ago, the captain says after reaching the cruise altitude, the temperature outside the plane is about -50°C and the temperature of the aluminum skin of the plane is about +50°C In this altitude, the DC9 cruise about 600mph and this is exact the speed of our prop tips at high rpms. It is the air friction at this speeds... with bets regards Juergen

The tips were done with West Systems epoxy by Cloudcars. The same pattern is on the back of the tips.
