Hi Guys! I haven't posted anything on this site since it came online after the unfortunate end of sonerai.net. Thanks Jeff for making a new site! My question is about the counter balance for the ailerons. I can't figure out what the plans are telling me. Furthermore I have the wing construction manual and it seems to be stating something else. As if the counterbalance is inside the wing instead of being inside the wing tip. Does anyone have pictures of this part while it was under construction for their project?

I was wondering the same thing I have Sonerai 1 plans and the counterbalance on the plans is not what I've seen in pictures.

The stretch plans tell you to mount them under the wing and cover them with a fiberglass fairing but another way is to incorporate them into the wing tips. I assume the wing tip method is from the plans of one of the other versions. Here is a photo of my under-the-wing lead weights and steel arms. If you need more help let me know. Ed Attachments:

That is what my #1 plans show, I haven't looked through Fred's wing manual yet maybe it's covered in there.

The way Schrome did it is the way the wing construction manual says to do it and I guess the way the stretch plans call for.....While I understand the way it's done in relation to the wing construction manual; I do not understand the way my plans are telling me. In my mind, if I were to make the aileron flush with the wing tip (before wingtip installation and meaning that the outboard aileron rib was flush with the wing tip rib), the aileron wouldn't be able to move up and down due to the counter balance rib being to close a fit. Am I wrong? Is the aileron off set 3/4" from the outboard wingtip rib? If that's the case how does the fiberglass wingtip which is fitted between the wing skin and tip rib, line up with the aileron fiberglass tip?

<scratching head> Is this what you're talking about? Lead weight bolted to the counterbalance rib, covered with the plastic thingy? ;D

Quite technical jargon there Chuck, yep I was pretty sure you had the balances on the tips on Mouser. Apparently some of the plans don't have that style.

Just to add more confusion, a third option is to have the counterweight rib but make the tip outboard of it stationary. I saw this first on Jeff's S1. I really like the look. Here is a photo that shows it: www.airport-data.com/aircraft/photo/385021.html

I would not do it the way I had done it in the picture again... Huge pain in the butt and potential for problems. The gap around it has to be big enough so that there is no way of binding the counterweight in the wing tip under any conditions. I am forced to do the same for my Cassutt, but I would be exploring other options for the Sonerai.

You can get rid of the gap by rounding the profile of the tip of counter balance, I did that on my tip mounted balancers and have only 1/8 of an inch gap. I could have closed the gap even smaller if I wanted to but I thought this was good enough. My setup looks likes mouser but with no large gap, the same could work for your setup.
