Hi,
I just purchased a Sonerai IILS and I'm starting to poke around for an engine. I'm not made of money so a new FWF package is out of the question. I'm looking for a 2180 or 2276 that I could build or purchase. Anyone have anything laying around? I found a pretty good deal on a 2165 but everyone I've talked to says to go with at least the 2180 if I plan to fly with a passenger.
Thanks, Todd

Hi Todd,
congratulations on your purchase! As to the engine: I think the 25cc displacement difference is not going to decide a passenger go/no-go. The difference is less than 1.5%, which is well within the performance spread you'll be having by the variations in propeller, intake- and exhaust, etc....

2180 GPASC with the following stuff: ellison TBI, alternator, starter, electronic SEI, Firewall, split cowling, carbon fiber baffles, fiberglass oil cooler shroud, remote oil filter with carbon fiber mounting plate, Fuel pump, gas collator, everything that is attached to the firewall(bulk head fittings), primer, chrome spinner, prop, grand rapids efis, and other firewall forward stuff that I do not remember off the top of my head for 5500 dollars.

Thanks for the replies! Oahupilot... it sounds like you have a nice drop in package there, unfortunately it's getting a little too rich for me. I can do the 2165 for about $3000. Hans... I was kind of thinking the same thing but... if I purchase a 2165 and then came across a 2180 for similar cost I'm gonna kick myself. A 2165 is maxed out without changing the crank, a 2180 I could always bring up to a 2276 with some new jugs. I don't know... just poking around still.

Todd
I flew for 12 years with my 1835 with a passenger on board for maybe 80% of the time, and it was not that bad...
air is colder up here, and it may make a difference... the other point is that a well built, tuned, and cared for powerplant, make a big difference.
but my 2276 performs much very much better a huge difference
Go for the 2276 the price is about the same as a 2180...
If you don't know which kit to build ,just order and read ,read, and read again engine building manuals from different sources ,and then you will understand you need a GPASC kit that is that simple...

Hi guys, here's my problem... based on what I've been told I'm looking for atleast a 2180. I have a HAPI 1600 FWF but if I was to make it a 2180 the only part that wouldn't be replaced would be the block and maybe the accessory case. My thought was that I could sell it to someone that actually wants a HAPI 1600 and then build or buy a 2180. Maybe I just need to be more patient but I'm starting to think that it would be cheaper for me to rebuild my 1600 than to buy another motor. Tony, the motor on Ebay is an unknown, unless it has the crank that I need I'd be in the same boat. Jbenton, as far as the HAPI accessory case... I already have one but I will be replacing it, or atleast the flywheel because I don't trust them much. I would be interested in hearing a little more about this engine you mentioned though. Thanks guys for all your help!

Here's an add I just picked up in the EAA newsletter from Independence Oregon. The price is right for sure. 1775 cc VW engine w/1.74:1 PSRU, $950. 1915 cc VW engine, direct drive, $950. Call Bruce Rose 503-848-2228; bruce@fal condesign.com (posted 2/1/12)
