Ivan and o2koold both sound like they have good engines.....I think the key element here is the 'scrounger/work on it yourself' part. John Monnett started with VW because he could get one cheap not because it was a designer engine in the 1970's.

I talked to these guys a bit about this motor. The ports on the top are exhaust ports, intake on the bottom. The cam is different than VW because the ports are moved, valves switched around. The studs are on a wider circle to allow a larger margin for the studs at the head and the case. All the parts that are reinforced on the standard case by welding or deep studding are cast stronger with this one. The crank nose and case bearing are larger for prop loads. No provision for an oil cooler on top, full flow style oiling only.
I wouldn't call this a conversion, but it is undeniably VW based.
This engine has not been run as of Airventure '11.
I really loved the heads. I asked if they would be available separately, he said no, only available complete. I think this is a mistake on their part. If they just sold castings to retailers it would have a better chance at success.
Part of the lure of the VW is the interchangeable parts. Once you go to such lengths to make it proprietary, I feel you have really not thought it out well, and you have left the VW do-it-yourself community behind. The VW community really doesn't take well to expensive packages, because that just makes a rebuilt Continental or Lycoming much more practical, as mentioned above.....
PS their name is MOTORAV, and they have a more standard conversion also. I haven't been able to find a website.....

Don't forget the "audibility" factor...........2700 rpm pockita pockita pockita vs 3500+ rpm vrrrrroooom of a VW.
