Juergen summed it up beautifully. Okay .... the shopping list includes Option 4 (No Starter and no Alternator, single ignition) as per attached. (If stock is available) Scott, will the X- Casting fit directly onto the block without any mods? I am leaning toward the 1915cc long block. Nice because it fits directly onto the firewall without any fuss. Single ignition ..... I would have preferred dual, but cannot have the best of all worlds. How many people have, or have had, a single ignition setup, and have you had any issues? Attachments:

Man, that Scott is speedy! ;D Good pic of the X option, Scott.
If it can be financially managed, I would strongly recommend dual ignition. If the mag fails (and sometimes they do), its really nice to continue flying safely home. The electronic secondary ignition is cheap insurance for the pilot and the aircraft. Many planes have only one mag and do well with very good maintenance, but I personally like the redundancy of dual ignition.

The efficiency of a government worker Tom! Bob, the II plans lay out the firewall for this x-casting and it mounts perfectly to the engine case. If you do not use the x-casting or the accessory case, you will have to fabricate your own mount for the II/IIL. I cannot comment on the I plans, as I have not seen them. These mounts give you the alternator and the mag mount as well as vibration isolation. What I was suggesting earlier was to get the accessory case for the starter, and get the less expensive one, paying attention to the spacing needed- this one has the Revmaster spacing. Then using the flywheel end piece from the x-casting to mount the rotor- no starter/heavy flywheel. If you look at the Sonerai.net archive photos, I think it was Ed Schrome (sorry Ed if I mis spelled or quoted) that lightened the accessory case to that of the x-casting. I would leave the starter mount material for the option of adding a starter down the road. As far as single vs. dual ignition goes, my friend has had 3 engine outs on his VW Cygnet (http://www.homebuiltdirectory.com/index.php?a=2&b=485) and none since upgrading to dual. I am a believer that sailors and aviators should learn from the lessons of those who go before as those lessons are usually written in blood. Scott R
