I had a peek at it at Airventure. It uses a forged magnesium case the is beefed up (see pictures) and is supposed to be stronger than a cast aluminum case. 2600CC, 94 bore and stroke 90hp at 2800rpm up to 150 with turbo. Custom heads with lots of huge fins. down firing exhaust Available in complete form as an LSA approved engine for $10k

No problem, Jeff. Ironically, the five red X's match the ones in my checkbook when I think about spending $10K, lol.

It occurred to me that every so many years vw aero conversion go up in displacement. 1600 to 1900? then 2180, 2300 and now 2600. Figure if you wait a little longer some one will just stick a prop on porsche 911 3.0 litter motor as the next step in the displacement war. Given the increase in price you might just be able to buy a 911 3.0 motor cheaper then aero vw conversion.

You can buy 0 hours O-200 for that price at barnstormers. "beefed" case mean that they both weight probably same and O -200 is real reliable aircraft engine.

other improvements have been created in the past. For instance, JPX of France created a VW-derived aero engine that sported very nice finning on both cylinders and heads: It's not too difficult to imagine where Jabiru got their inspiration from, isn't it? Too bad JPX is no longer in business, at least not as far as their VW derivative aero engines is concerned... Hans

When people ask me why I went with a Continental....the main reason I give them is, "THE PRICE" I have about $4,500.00 dollars tied up in my overhauled Continental C85-8 engine. 1. Basket case A65-8 engine $500.00 (found it for sale on the Sonerai site) 2. Grind & Nitrite crank $360.00. 3. Used C85 pistons, rods $80.00. 4. Used O200 cylinders plus having them overhauled & yellow tagged $1,200.00. 5. New 2 Slick mags, plugs & harness $950.00. 6. Reground cam & airboat lifters $180.00 7. Overhauling, reinforcing & line boring case $750.00. 8. Cylinder Rings, overhaul kit, gaskets etc. $200.00 9. Odds & ends about $200.00.
My C85-8 Continental engine has 85 “Clysdale” HP at 2575RPM at, 2750RPM about 90HP (if I want to run it that hard). The engine has NO electrics & must be hand propped. It weighs about 180 LBS on the plane…close to what a 2180VW weighs with starter & alternator. There are 2 important considerations… you must be a good scrounger & must learn to work on the engines yourself. The VW variants are getting way too expensive for me….or maybe EVERYTHING is.

Pete,
JPX are still in business, but are not into VW-derivatives anymore. Currently they are concentrating on smaller 2-stroke jobs. If I remember correctly, they priced their VW-based engines on par (or almost so) with Limbach, Sauer and Co.
I once contacted the company that now supplies spare parts for JPX VW engines, only to learn that the fancy cylinder head and cylinders on the picture can not be supplied. The reason was that that photo showed a new prototype (the JPX 75-something) that was never produced in quantities...
cheers Hans

Ivan, I hear you on the high cost any engine. But I still think the VW is the least expensive way. I just priced out the parts what would be a firewall forward zero time 2276 package, including 044 heads, 4340 crank, 35 amp alt., mag, starter, carb, accessory/motor mount, F1 hub and a cam that should make around 90hp@3600rpm for around $5000. I did forget a few things, but that could be offset be looking for things on sale and unused previously owned parts like the carbs and accessories. and using 041 heads.
Granted, your Continental makes for a better climbing and faster plane. The only fly Sonerai I have seen had a A-80 in it. He did a low fly-by at 180 IAS. Very pretty. Scott R
